About this Costume
Construction Details:
I was very particular about how I wanted the colors of this costume to look, so I hunted down a rich eggplant twill to make the dress. I drafted the pattern on my dressform, and faced the upper portion of the dress, so it would look nice and clean. I tracked down a gorgeous minty satin, for the green accents on the costume. The back of the fabric had an almost dupioni silk texture so I used that side instead. I bought a super padded bra and covered that with the fabric, and sewed it into the dress. The obi was made from a nubby upholstery fabric in the perfect shade of yellow. It attaches like a waist cincher, with hook and eyes in the back. The bow (made from the same fabric + LOTS of interfacing and wire) attaches to the obi. The hood ended up being easier than I thought. I lined a trapezoid shaped piece of my minty satin with a green cotton, folded the fabric in the right spot, pinned it to my wig, and I was done! The bead necklace was made from playpen balls (?) for kids that I strung on fishing line and hand sewed to my hood. The shoes were purchased heels (I know she wears flats in the art, but I didn't like that silhouette) that I painted glossy red with Krylon Fusion. The wig was purchased and trimmed, and I used i.fairy ruby red lenses for a little bit of evil. The prayer slips were made at the last minute and probably shouldn't be scrutinized in too much detail, hehe.
Personal Thoughts:
I love Ms. Rao with a passion. Okami is definitely in my top 3 games so this costume makes me really happy. After loosing a bunch of weight I don't really have the boobage to pull off Rao anymore so she is retired.
