About this Costume
Construction Details:
This costume was made from vinyl, vinyl, and more vinyl. The shirt was probably the simplest part of this outfit, since the vinyl was stretchy enough to just pull over my head. The skirt was made from a modified circle skirt pattern and involves a lot of topstitched vinyl overlays. Hemming this skirt nearly killed me. Every time I had to stitch on top of the vinyl, I first had to apply scotch tape to the fabric, or else my machine would kill it. I've since learned that you can just lubricate the vinyl (with any kind of oil) before sewing. One of my favorite parts of this costume is the belt buckle, because it has Vela's logo on it. It was made from wood and posterboard. The boots were pretty easy, since the base boots I had already looked pretty outerspacey. All they needed was a little extra craft foam and paint! I *attempted* to make Vela's tri-rocket launcher by modifying a nerf gun, but I don't really like how it turned out. I used spray foam and bondo, which ended up making it really heavy and hard to sand and shape.
Personal Thoughts:
When I made this costume I wasn't very skilled at working with unusual costume materials, so I really hope to remake this in 2012 now that I have a lot more experience with vinyl etc!
