About this Costume
Construction Details:
I wanted to make this costume really rather as natural and earthy as possible, since Vikings obviously wouldn't have professionally tailored clothes or anything. That meant little hand-sewn touches and attention to the smaller details. Quite honestly, the costume as a whole hasn't lived up to my expectations, so I would like to rework the things that bother me the most.

Namely, the pants. I really wanted to destress the pants, but from the get-go had trouble finding the right color denim. The denim I bought was a dark blackish color, but after destressing with bleach, it pulled out the indigo dye and made the color very much blue. Even after attempting to dye the pants, nothing could really mask that tough indigo dye. I'd like to have another go at the pants with a different starting fabric to see if I can get something a bit more earthy like in the film.

I also completely messed up my wig by cutting it too short in the back and had to last-minute weft more hair into it. Luckily that turned out well enough.

I'm actually rather proud of how the boots came out. I had to cover the UGG-like boots with suede since the original color was too dark. I'm also rather pleased with pulling together many props for this costume, including Hiccup's journal and pencil, a knife, and my most adorable plush Toothless that my friend made as a gift for me! Personal Thoughts:
Words cannot express the feelings I had for this movie when I first saw it in theaters. It was a breathtaking (and humorous) experience, and I was rather dazed when I left the movie theater. How to Train Your Dragon instantly became one of my top favorite movies of all time, and I had planned to cosplay Hiccup practically as soon I the movie began.

I'm so glad to finally be able to cosplay him, after months of wanting to. I feel I share a lot of similarities with Hiccup. Curious, have a way with animals, creative, slightly awkward, and most of all-- we're both left-handed!! I love characters who are left-handed-- I feel akin to them :3 Silly, but true.
