About this Costume
- Construction Details:
- So I made this whole entire thing except for the whip (Indiana Jones Toy Whip FTW!) and the fishnets (I bought them, obviously.. although if anyone out there knows how to make tights, I would love to learn). I spent a solid day on the corset itself. And really, it's not a corset at all. It doesn't cinch tight, it just... kinda is. The design in the manga (Circus Ark of Kuroshitsuji) is that this is an 8 piece corset-thing that doesn't lace up in the back, although it has laces in the back. PURELY decorative. (Ridiculous.) And then lace in the front over the chest (also purely decorative). She does, however, have a busk closure, which I went out, bought the shortest one, and then hacked up because apparently everyone in the world has twice the length of torso I have and this corset-thing requires. I put steel boning (7 pieces) to give it shape and mass and so that it wouldn't do the crinkle in the middle thing that vinyl likes to do. I broke a total of 3 sewing-machine needles in the process. Oh woe is me. (I chose vinyl because in the manga, whenever Beast is drawn, she has these huge shine marks on her clothes that really seem like vinyl. I'm sure leather would have been more accurate to the period, but vinyl looked shinier and circus-y-er and was MUCH cheaper.) Random accessories include the headband w/giant rose, garters holding onto cloth attached to the corset (derp), diamond patterned garters for the thigh-highs, rose ankle ribbon ties over the Mary Jane high heels I wore, lace on the gloves, choker piece that holds the chest lace together/up, skirt, and sash. It took me a sizeable amount of time to get into costume and put on makeup and eyelashes and all the little accessories. But it felt great to walk around as. I'm so proud of that corset-thing.
