Cosplayer Shiva > Costume of Sayuri Nitta from Memoirs of a Geisha
About this Costume
- Construction Details:
My version of the kimono Sayuri wears when fan dancing at the teahouse as a maiko in the 1930s. The outer kimono is a real furisode from 1930s Japan, which features a fan pattern and is very similar to Sayuri's.
- Personal Thoughts:
- I fell in love with the book, Memoirs of a Geisha, when I read it a couple years ago, and enjoyed imagining what the kimono Sayuri, Mameha, and Hatsumono wore looked like. I'd also always wanted to cosplay a maiko, so I combined the two, following the book's descriptions as opposed to the movie versions, which were more inaccurate. The kimono and obi vintage 1930s items from Japan, while I made the juban and other accessories. This was my first attempt at wearing kimono properly, and I still have a lot to learn!
