I've been sewing and making costumes since elementary school (I think 1st or 2nd grade), but I'd always done original designs. I actually dressed up my Barbie dolls as Greek gods and goddesses and made up little stories about them! I've made a number of friends through the Harry Potter fandom in recent years who are into anime/manga and cosplay which sparked my interest in this aspect of costuming.
